On making the decision to have new windows installed in your home, you’ll need to decide which style, design and material will complement your home and work for you as a family. Get this bit right and you could significantly improve the look of your property and make it more efficient to heat in winter. Get it wrong, however, and the results could be disastrous.

Your window installation company should be able to help you make the right decision – they’ve got the expertise to  know which option will work for you and your property. However, with so many businesses out there, it can be      difficult to know what to look for when choosing the right window company for you.

With over 28 years’ experience in the industry we know what works best for our customers and we’ve prepared some top tips for you to follow when looking for a window company.

Tip 1 - Choose a company that offers a wide choice

When choosing your new windows you’ll need to think about the type of property you live in, the period of the property and style of windows used in the local area. For instance, if you live in a modern home, the aluminium window, with its contemporary aesthetics, might be the best option for you. Or you might prefer the Vertical Sliding Sash window which is perfect for the more traditional property, including the Victorian terrace or the country home, especially as these windows can be fitted in conservation areas. Residence 9 windows are also popular, as they’re ideal for anyone who’d like a timber appearance, but without the maintenance issues.

No matter which window option works for you, you should choose a company that can advise on the style of your property – be wary of anyone offering a one size fits all approach. Here at NWS, we offer timber, aluminium, PVCu, sash and Residence 9 windows and, with over 28 years’ experience, we can help you decide which is the best option for you.

Tip 2 – Ask for testimonials

Once you’ve found a company that stocks the range of windows you’re looking for, ask them for details of a couple of customers who’ve had similar windows installed and speak to them about the service they received. You’ll want to ask them about the windows and whether they’re happy with the quality and the installation, but you should also ask whether the company was professional, about the quality of the product and whether it fitted the windows within the timescale they wanted.

Tip 3 – Choose a company with plenty of experience

Choose a company with a proven track record – one that has been trading for a number of years and you’ll find that they will want to live up to their reputation. You should also make sure that they are FENSA registered and have the necessary accreditations. For the best possible service, choose a company which uses its own in-house fitters. Unlike NWS, lots of window companies sub-contract the installation to others which means their service is less efficient.

Tip 4 – Make sure the window company will take on small jobs

You may be looking at just one or two windows or an entrance door that need replacing – but you deserve to be given the same priority as any other customer. At NWS, we pride ourselves on being large enough to build the biggest of conservatories, but small enough a personal service too for smaller jobs too.

Tip 5 – Check the company meets the latest regulations

At NWS, we take safety seriously and you should always choose a company that meets the relevant British Standards for quality. Windows should also come with a Kitemark certifying their energy efficiency. You should only ever choose to use FENSA registered installers as their work will comply with the Building Regulations for your area.

Tip 6 – Make sure your windows are fully protected by a guarantee

NWS offers a 10 year manufacturers’ warranty on both windows and the installation. This gives you added reassurance and peace of mind that a good guarantee provides.

Tip 7 – Use a company that manufactures the windows

Make sure you choose a window installation company that manufactures their own windows, like NWS, as prices will be more competitive.

Tip 8 – Beware of offers that sound too good to be true

Don’t be fooled by double glazing companies advertising offers that sound too good to be true – such as the back windows free when you buy the front.  You could end up paying more in the long run, or receive an inferior product.  Stick to a company that is tried and trusted, like NWS, and you’ll reap the benefits in the long run.

Tip 9 - Don’t just go with the cheapest options

Make sure you carefully consider any quotes you receive for your windows.  Make sure there aren’t going to be any hidden costs added afterwards, for example, for the installation.  A significantly cheaper deal than the rest probably means that the window company outsources some of its work to others – so they will lose control of the quality of the installation – and the company may refuse to put this right.

Tip 10 - Ask about the after-care service

Make sure that the window company you choose has a policy of good aftercare too.  They should be able to offer you advice on maintenance and care of your windows or conservatory to ensure the best results in the long term.  Ask their previous customers how they find their service after the installation and if they were quick to respond to any call backs.
